Автомобиль начали собирать в 1997 году в опытно-промышленном производстве, а с 2000 года выпуск был запущен и на заводском конвейере. Последний автомобиль покинул конвейер 27 декабря 2012 года.

Премьерный показ произошёл на Московском автосалоне – первой модели из нового семейства «Самара-2». Машинка, кстати, занимала самое главное место на стенде АВТОВАЗа. В том же 1997-м ее производство было начато на мощностях Опытно-промышленного производства.
