AJS was founded by Albert John "Jack" Stevens in 1909 in Wolverhampton, England, as A. J. Stevens & Co. Ltd. In 1938, AJS became part of the group Associated Motorcycles, which in the 1960's became Norton-Villiers Group. From 1974 AJS re-started without being part of a group and since 1998 it has been selling Chinese-made motorcycles and scooters under the AJS brand.
