В 1979 году на ВАЗе возникла идея создания открытого четырёхместного электромобиля для обслуживания курортов, выставок, парковых зон. Ю. Верещагиным был разработан оригинальный дизайн-проект электромобиля ВАЗ-1801 "Пони". Ведущим конструктором стал В. Барановский.
