В 1989 году компания Hess совместно с Nutzfahrzeuggesellschaft Arbon & Wetzikon (NAW) (поставщик шасси) и Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) (поставщик электрооборудования) разработала первый швейцарский низкопольный троллейбус. Этот сочленённый троллейбус был выпущен в 1991 году и получил обозначение BGT-N, или, скорее, новую марку Swisstrolley, а позднее Swisstrolley 1. Обозначение модели выглядит следующим образом:

• B – Bus;
• G – Gelenk (сочлененный);
• T – Trolley;
• N – Niederflur (низкопольный).
