Virtual Electric double-deckers launch in Bristol

Two virtual electric buses have been launched with First in Bristol.

Only five of the vehicles are set to operate in the UK. Along with the two in Bristol, three are operating in London on a trial basis. Engineers and scientists will examine how the buses perform and crucially their environmental impact.

The buses are expected to enter service at the end of January.

Alexander Dennis offers the "Virtual Electric" option on the Enviro400H. The Enviro400VE is able to operate up to 80 percent of the time in fully-electric mode where the engine is shut off. This can be coordinated with GPS. An inductive charging system can supplement the diesel engine in recharging the batteries. The first Enviro400VE buses entered service with Tower Transit in London in 2015.
