Автомобильная Фабрика Прибой была основана 25 июля 1952 г. указом Социалистической Федеративной Республики Югославии. Производство автомобилей по лицензии Saurer-Werke началось 30 октября 1953 г. Первые автомобили собственной разработки появились в 1965 г. В 1970 г. был подписан контракт с концерном Daimler-Benz на производство, техническое и финансовое сотрудничество.
