После неудачи на Дакаре-1994 было принято решение о поиске наиболее подходящего силового агрегата взамен КамАЗовских моторов, которые исчерпали предел форсирования. Выбор пал на американский Cummins N14-500E мощностью 520 л.c. Существовало два варианата кузова: "коробка" и "горбатый".
