Очевидная бесперспективность кузова, опробованного на опытных сериях 3-5-1/3-5-4, привела к разработке принципиально нового кузова, выполненного в стилистике европейских аналогов. Разработка была начата во второй половине 1972 года, после смены главного конструктора АЗЛК.
