Вплоть до постановки на главный конвейер в 1970 году ГАЗ-24 производили малыми партиями, к этому времени было выпущено 793 экземпляра. Часть машин, выпущенных в период с 1968 по 1970 годы, была в версиях "Такси" и "Милиция". 15 июля 1970 года в торжественной обстановке ГАЗ-24 сменила на основном конвейере ГАЗ-21.
