Всего для участия в гонке Mille Miglia 1940 года было подготовлено сразу пять болидов на шасси BMW 328 с форсированными до 135 л.с. двигателями. Но по-настоящему в историю вошел только один — модифицированный «ле-мановский» BMW 328 Touring Coupe со стартовым номером 70. Пилотами были эсэсовские гонщики Хашке фон Ханштайн (Huschke von Hanstein) и Вальтер Бюмер (Walter Baumer). На прямиках купе разгонялось до 220 км/ч, а средняя скорость на дистанции составила рекордные 166,7 км/ч.

Das BMW 328 Touring Coupé, das auf der Basis des BMW 328 Sportwagen gebaut wurde, beim Start zum Großen Preis von Brescia ("Mille Miglia") 1940. Am Steuer waren Huschke v. Hanstein und Walter Bäumer. Sie wurden am Ende Gesamtsieger und feierten damit einen der größten Rennerfolge in der BMW Motorsportgeschichte.
