Автомобиль стал первым плодом унификации модельного ряда Magirus-Deutz с автомобилями других фирм входящих в состав Industrial Vehicles Corporation (IVECO), попыткой составить конкуренцию автомобилю Unimog U 1300 L.

С марта 1981 года автомобиль сменил название на Iveco-Magirus.
