В мае 1959 г. на МЗМА были изготовлены два эталонных образца МЗМА-965, впоследствии переданных на завод «Коммунар»(г. Запорожье, УССР) в целях подготовки их серийного производства. В это же время для автомобилей принято наименование "Запорожец".
