Во время «6 часов Нюрбургринга» 8 июля 1973 года Ники Лауда занял поул-позицию на оранжевом купе BMW ALPINA в ливрее Jägermeister. Он установил новый рекорд круга - 8: 21,3 минуты в гонке. Лауда также выиграл 24-часовую гонку на Северной петле на той же машине. В конце гоночного сезона 1973 года явным победителем стала BMW. Одних только очков команды ALPINA было бы достаточно, чтобы победить Ford и обеспечить BMW чемпионат Европы по кузовным гонкам.
