С начала своего выпуска до второй половины 1953 года Volkswagen получил условное наименование "SPLIT WINDOW" из-за двойного заднего окна. Тогда же его сравнивали с глазками жука, отчего автомобиль и получил свой знаменитое прозвище "Жук" (Beetle (англ.), Käfer (нем.)).
