Contested on circuits as diverse as Monza, Donington Park, Hockenheim, Misano, Anderstorp, Brno, the Osterreichring, the Nurburgring, Spa, Jarama and Estoril the 3.5-litre V8-engined Rover Vitesses had proved stunningly competitive with the similar-capacity straight-six engined BMW 635CSi Coupes. We understand this particular ‘Bastos’-liveried Rover Vitesse SD1 was acquired in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s by the vendor from the late great Gerry Marshall who sadly passed away a few months ago. At that time it was Bastos liveried but in need of cosmetic attention and when the roof was stripped back, the vendor recalls seeing Jean-Louis Schlesser’s name emblazoned as a driver. We cannot identify the race history of TWR005 but it would appear that Schlesser drove this car at some time. Additionally, there is a scrutineers label on the car ‘BTC, 7.6.87, competitor no 11’ which may assist identification. The Rover has been preserved within Arthur Carter’s Collection since acquisition from Marshall and we understand that it was running when laid up, but has not been run for many years. Prospective buyers are advised to check with Bonhams for any amendments to this description by the time of Sale and to satisfy themselves as to the originality, status and completeness of this vehicle prior to bidding.
