Автомобиль построен в 1967 году, для участия в гонках серии Can Am и выступал в группе 4, чей тех. регламент ограничивал объем двигателя 5 литрами, это был первый опыт выступления команды McLaren в этой группе. Также нужно отметить что это был первый McLaren с монококом. M6 A1 был оснащен экспериментальным small-block Chevrolet V8 с алюминиевым блоком цилиндров, системой впрыска топлива "Lucas" и пятиступенчатой КПП "Hewland".

Выступал он один не полный сезон, дважды финишировав на втором месте и дважды на первом.
