RAPID Penang users can now look forward to commuting on the new fleet of double-decker buses on Aug 1.

The buses will ply the 101 route from Pengkalan Weld to Teluk Bahang, the 102 route from the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas to Teluk Bahang, and the 301 route between Pengkalan Weld and Relau.

Rapid Penang chief operating officer Mejar (Rtd) Mohd Shukri Abdul Rahman said the buses had a sitting capacity of 108 passengers each.

“These are Alexander Dennis buses from Scotland which are capable of carrying 40% more passengers than ordinary buses.

He added that each new bus had eight CCTVs for monitoring, three destination boards (front, rear and side), speakers, three LCD TVs and a system to alert passengers on seat availability.

“The upper level can accommodate 53 passengers but they are not allowed to stand.

“In addition, by the third quarter of next year, we hope to have a new bus information system for all buses, including a tracking system,” he said.
