With the financial backing of BritishLeyland and Patrick Motorsport, local hero Richard Longman won the British Saloon Car Championship (BSCC) in both 1978 and 1979, with a modified Mini 1275 GT. Longman achieved 11 class victories in 1978, followed by 10 class victories the next year.
