The Help for Heroes campaign got a big boost from construction giant JCB this month, when a very special jcb 3cx for sale sold at auction for over £70,000.

JCB made a one-off 3CX in the colours of the Union Jack last year, and the Staffordshire-based firm decided to run a Christmas fund-raising initiative for Help for Heroes, a charity that supports British servicemen and women wounded in conflicts around the world. Eventually the patriotic backhoe loader was taken by national plant hire firm Fork Rent. The winning bid was £70,250, which will go towards Help for Heroes’ work to support wounded soldiers. The Union Jack backhoe was created to launch JCB’s new Eco machines that claim to save customers over £3,500 in fuel costs over three years.

JCB’s fund-raising campaign ran in the last two weeks of 2010, beginning with a 200ft barge in the river Thames that featured festively-ornamented JCB vehicles and two enormous Christmas trees. The barge was in the Thames for the duration of the two week auction of the jcb 3cx for sale, adorned with a large banner inviting the public to support Help for Heroes by donating through text messages.
