ST. THOMAS, Ont., September 16, 2004 -- The Canadian Forces formally accepted delivery today of the first Multi-Purpose Engineer Vehicle (MPEV) from Arva Industries Inc. of St. Thomas, Ontario. The acquisition is part of a $20-million government standing offer which will see the Department of National Defence initially acquire up to 28 high-speed backhoe/front-end loaders for Army Combat Engineers.

The MPEV is a robust backhoe and front-end loader with a powerful and environmentally friendly engine, with a custom designed chassis and suspension. The new vehicle operates at speeds up to 100 km/h, navigates inclines of up to 60 per cent, and is designed to operate side-by-side with the Army's LAV III family of vehicles. Its high transit speed will enable the Army to make available trucks, trailers and personnel that would otherwise be required to transport traditional digging equipment. As the MPEV may encounter mines during deployed operations, Defence R&D Canada Valcartier developed an add-on blast mine protection system for the vehicle. This protection system kit can be installed on any vehicle being deployed to a region where threat of mines exists. The acquisition of the MPEV supports the goals of Army Strategy to transform into a medium-weight information-age Army through modernization to a more agile, lethal and survivable force.
