В период 1957-58 гг. итальянская фирма Pietro Frua по заказу Volvo построила три прототипа этой модели, позже (в сентябре 1958 года) названных компанией Volvo следующим образом: P958-X1, P958-X2 и P958-X3. Название расшифровывается таким образом: P - Project (Проект), 9 - сентябрь (девятый месяц года), 58 - 1958 год.
